Pantone’s 2018 Color of the Year
Pantone announced that Ultra Violet is this year’s color of the year. It’s an interesting change after last year’s bright yellow-green shade, Greenery. Ultra Violet marks the first time, since 2014, that a shade of purple is the color of the year.
Pantone explains that, “Ultra Violet suggests the mysteries of the cosmos, the intrigue of what lies ahead, and the discoveries beyond where we are.” The color purple has a long history of being linked to mystical and spiritual qualities. Purple energizes and inspires connection; it is a great color to use in meditative practices.
The creation of this color comes after the deaths of significant musical icons over the past years including David Bowie and Prince. Ultra Violet is reminiscent of the two, along with rock legend, Jimi Hendrix, as they all utilized similar shades of purple and brought them to the forefront through their expressions of individuality and musical talents.
Earlier in 2017, after Prince’s death, Pantone released a new shade of purple, Love Symbol #2, to honor the international icon. The color is inspired by his Yamaha purple piano. Prince was to the color purple ever since his release of “Purple Rain.” Click here to read more about Love Symbol #2.
